What’s in a name?

The search was for name that came without meaning, if that makes sense at all. Sort of like Pavement or Pulp. Both essentially meaningless beyond what it plainly describes. No charged undertones, which could be found in words such as “Metal”, “Kill” or maybe even “Baby”. Instead, the name was to be an empty vessel in which new meaning and associations could be placed. We think we sort of found it with Shelves.

Too Much Information (TMI) Alert: We omitted the use of “the” so the band never reads as “the Shelves.” One, it seems to imply that it means just that, shelves. Two, it would be distastrous if we were ever given monikers like the Ramones do. E.g. Noel Shelf, Robin Shelf, Brian Shelf…

… although Mel Shelf would have sort of worked.
