with one comment

Objects to be thrown on Noel’s face:

Paper cups with coffee
Soft fruit/vegetables
Soft tomatoes freeflow to handle
Beer
Eggs
Shoes
Paper balls
Books
Slap
Punch
I fancy socks too. Colourful lah
Onions
Flour

Confetti
Water
Freshly squeezed lemon juice or similar, not too strong watered down

Mud. Think Glastonbury. Yellow wellies too.
+ more need to keep it up over the whole video

Garbage bags, plastic wrap

Equipment List
• Camera? 7D for 50p?
• Be nice if we could get some lens flare and/or Lens whacking
• Tripod – with wheels if we want to move a bit, needs to be very smooth surface or DIY something or some kind of crane I can get a small camera dolly.
• Lens, something like: Canon L series prime favour a 24mm prime f/1,4 II USM (nice lens but will that mean the camera will be too close to the action and get splashed?)
• Lights – a couple of kino flo’s and maybe a ring light for the camera with stands, reflectors no prob
• Something DIY to protect camera screw it let the lens get it as bad as noel
• All the misc bits and pieces like stuff to throw, cleaning materials, black cloth, clips, stands depending on space welcome to come and recce our office space, we can do this at night
• Plastic to cover the space like Dexter if u seen that
• Studio space would be best, need to be able to make a mess and have enough space to set the lights up
• Smoke machine, fans no prob. Will get a heavy duty blower too so we can contort his already ugly face.
• Coloured gels if possible
• Something to create movement (light) bicycle wheel with diffusion paper and a few holes or similar

Rough Outline from Brendon

One fixed MCU shot of Noel singing, think Radiohead “No Surprises” http://youtu.be/u5CVsCnxyXg
Primarily a one take, in camera for real video.

As the song begins and Noel sings, objects start to be thrown at him, starting with softer, lighter smaller things, confetti, food etc. Lemons, onions or similar are also thrown to make his eyes red.
As the video progresses, bigger, harder, sticker, messier things start to get thrown at him then he gets hit by a glass bottle, a piece of wood, a punch to nose (bleeds). The lighting changes slowly over the course of the video to a more dramatic/moody look. Smoke machine adds mood/diffusion.

Notes

– By the end of this Noel would be physically hurt and the room would be a mess so it needs to be carefully rehearsed as multiple takes wouldn’t be possible.

– The camera (depending on equip) could move around very slightly to give a floating feel.

– The intention at this point is to shoot at 60p and then slow it down to 23.98. To get achieve lip sync the audio playback needs to be x250%. If this proves to difficult or doesn’t look good in testing then revert to realtime.

– Need to wrap the room for easy clean up

– Need to test how hard to throw things or maybe make a DIY launcher

Here is a list of frame rates vs audio play back speed for lip sync, it covers both PAL/NTSC.

Maybe PAL 48fps could be a sweet spot, see below:

For NTSC, using a 24p timebase, for the following frame rates, adjust the song speed to:

12 fps: make song last 1.956x longer by stretching it to 51.1% speed
18 fps: make song last 1.333x longer by stretching it to 75.0% speed
20 fps: make song last 1.226x longer by stretching it to 81.6% speed
22 fps: make song last 1.067x longer by stretching it to 93.7% speed
26 fps: make song last 0.907x as long as normal; play it at 110.25% speed
30 fps: make song last 0.800x as long as normal; play it at 125% speed
32 fps: make song last 0.747x as long as normal; play it at 133.87% speed
36 fps: make song last 0.672x as long as normal; play it at 148.81% speed
48 fps: make song last 0.498x as long as normal; play it at 200.80% speed
60 fps: make song last 0.400x as long as normal; play it at 250.00% speed

For NTSC, using a 30p timebase, for the following frame rates, adjust the song speed to:

12 fps: make song last 2.445x longer by stretching it to 40.91% speed
18 fps: make song last 1.667x longer by stretching it to 60.00% speed
20 fps: make song last 1.533x longer by stretching it to 65.23% speed
22 fps: make song last 1.333x longer by stretching it to 75.01% speed
24 fps: make song last 1.250x as long as normal; play it at 80.00% speed
26 fps: make song last 1.134x as long as normal; play it at 88.22% speed
32 fps: make song last 0.933x as long as normal; play it at 107.14% speed
36 fps: make song last 0.840x as long as normal; play it at 119.05% speed
48 fps: make song last 0.622x as long as normal; play it at 160.73% speed
60 fps: make song last 0.500x as long as normal; play it at 200.00% speed

For PAL

12 fps: make song last 2.000x as long as normal; play it at 50.00% speed
18 fps: make song last 1.400x as long as normal; play it at 71.44% speed
20 fps: make song last 1.266x as long as normal; play it at 78.96% speed
23 fps: make song last 1.080x as long as normal; play it at 92.60% speed
27 fps: make song last 0.920x as long as normal; play it at 108.68% speed
30 fps: make song last 0.840x as long as normal; play it at 119.04% speed
32 fps: make song last 0.778x as long as normal; play it at 128.56% speed
37 fps: make song last 0.680x as long as normal; play it at 147.04% speed
48 fps: make song last 0.520x as long as normal; play it at 192.32% speed
50 fps: make song last 0.500x as long as normal; play it at 200.00% speed
